Component selection is not a step that happens automatically once the schematic is complete. It is an active engineering task that runs through the entire design phase and can determine the fate of a project โ regardless of how technically flawless the schematic is.
We select every component against several criteria simultaneously: electrical characteristics, package and dimensions, temperature range, reliability and โ equally important โ availability and price at the quantity that matches the planned production run. A component that perfectly meets the specification but is only available from a single distributor with a 40-week lead time is not a good component for a project that needs to go into series production.
We work with leading international distributors โ TME, Mouser, Farnell, Digi-Key โ as well as local and regional distributors who can often offer shorter delivery times and simpler customs procedures for smaller quantities. For every key component in a project we identify at least one verified alternate โ another manufacturer or part that is pin-to-pin or functionally compatible, so the project is not vulnerable to a single-source shortage.
The component shortages we have seen in recent years have taught the industry that supply chain must be part of design thinking from day one โ not only when the production order is placed. For this reason we define and document alternate components in the BOM from the start, not as an afterthought.
We pay particular attention to components with long lifecycle requirements or specific application demands. Industrial applications require a wider temperature range than consumer electronics. Medical or safety-critical applications require documented component qualifications. Outdoor applications require UV stability, moisture protection, mechanical resilience. All of these requirements are mapped to the component from the first day, not at the end when the design is already locked.
At the end of the process the client receives a BOM that is not just a parts list โ it is a living document with MPN numbers, verified alternates, recommended distributors and current pricing at the projected quantity. That document remains with the client and remains useful years later, with every new order or transition to a new manufacturer.
